Kevin Ryan, a former chemist and lab manager at Underwriters Laboratories, was fired by UL in 2004 for publicly questioning the report being drafted by NIST on their World Trade Center investigation. Mr. Ryan questioned how steel components that were certified to ASTM E119 could fail from being exposed to temperatures of less than 2000F for less than a few hours. He suggested that the public should not be misled into believing that jet fuel fires could cause this steel to collapse, and that a failure of this sort should be of great concern to his company.
