These ropes are about 3" in diameter, and extremely heavy. During my last year on-board Enterprise, I had the honor (or was it punishment?) of being a line-handler whenever we left or pulled into a port. The docking process is very slow, and most of the thousands of sailors waiting for liberty call could do nothing but sit in their offices and twiddle their thumbs.
