Big E in Mid-Production, 1958Construction of the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), is well underway at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1958. The shipyard is located on the James River in Newport News, Virginia, about 20 miles upstream of Naval Station Norfolk.
