Big E in Mid-Production, 1958

Construction of the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), is well underway at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1958. The shipyard is located on the James River in Newport News, Virginia, about 20 miles upstream of Naval Station Norfolk. Newport News is the only facility in the United States capable of constructing and refueling our nation's fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
