When I came on-board the USS Enterprise in September of 1992, she'd been sitting in a drydock at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia for the past two years, and would continue to be in the shipyard for another two years before we took her out for sea trials on September 27th, 1994. It was the largest, longest, most extensive, and most expensive overhaul the Navy has ever accomplished, costing the US taxpayers about half the price of a brand-new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
