The stern end of the ship is where aircraft come flying in for landings. You can see several of the arresting gear cables strung across the landing area, which trap the hook on the back of the aircraft to bring them to a sudden halt. There's an F-14 Tomcat that just trapped a wire and is coming to a quick stop. Keep in mind the back of the ship is sometimes moving up and down 10 feet or more due to the motion of the ocean. Landing a jet plane on an aircraft carrier isn't the easiest thing in the world to do; as the pilot's are found of saying, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
