The Enterprise's four steam-powered catapults propel aircraft from 0 to 180 MPH along a 250-foot track. This is where the catapult's job is finished - the aircraft are on their own from here. The 'bridles' overhanging the ship's bow no longer serve a functional purpose since the catapults were redesigned and rebuilt, but they are kept on for aesthetic reasons.
