Seaman Recruit Matthew J. Smith (Company 059, Recruit Training Command, San Diego) received the Academic Excellence Award for attaining the highest test scores in Company 059 when he was graduated from boot camp in August, 1992. Smitty was then sent to Newport News Shipbuilding to join the team of sailors and civilians that were rebuilding the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65). He first served as a team member in the SFOMS/Berthing division and played a key role in refurbishing living quarters for 5,500 sailors. When the four-year shipyard period was concluded and the Enterprise began two years of work-ups and at-sea training, SFOMS was disbanded and Smitty joined the WEPS/G-1 Division as a Flight Deck Ordnanceman. He went on to become one of Enterprise's handful of outstanding Aviation Ordnancemen Third Class, and stayed with G-1 Flight Deck until he was honorably discharged on June 16, 1996. Ten days later the ship left Norfolk for its first six-month cruise since 1989.

Smitty is now a civilian, but he is still as handsome, charming and brilliant as when this photo was taken. He also owns a nice little website, www.sizor.com.
